Rotarians Rock!
On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, members of the Petersburg Breakfast Rotary club presented dictionaries to all 3rd and 4th grade students at Walnut Hill Elementary School. Members present were Wayne Crocker, director of the Petersburg City Library system, Cleve Wright, president of the club, Lawrence Heyd, past president and Manager Engineering of Gerdau, Dick Gates, club secretary, and Sam Parham a former president of the organization. Students learned about what the Rotary club is and what it does. They also learned that when they become 9th graders they can become a part of the Rotary as students. The Rotary Club is the largest service organization in the USA. The donation of the dictionaries was made possible by donations from Gerdau, the Cameron Foundation and from the Rotary club.

The Flying Squirrels
Walnut Hill is in the House- well they are definitely in the Squirrels' House, the Flying Squirrels that is! I had an opportunity to go the Diamond yesterday for a pre-opening day celebration. While there, I saw a variety of artwork that had been done by children. As I passed by one of the posters, I thought it looked very familiar. I took a picture of it and sent it to our art teacher, Mrs. Guerrrero. She confirmed what I thought. It was a picture that one of our students had done last year that won an art contest for the Flying Squirrels! The picture has been turned into a giant poster and is there for everyone to see.
Congratulations to Azavion Shannon, a 3rd grade student in Mrs. Rosa Hobson's class, for his awesome artwork!

Walnut Hill students participate in Roarapalooza! This is a part of our ESD (effective schoolwide discipline) program and is held once every 9 weeks. Students who have received no referrals and no suspensions (in-school or out of school) are allowed to participate. Students participate in a variety of activites which include: computer time, games and puzzles, active games (Twister, hula hoop, jump rope, etc.) and dancing. The activity is held during the students' resource time. Look at the Raorapalooza slide show at the top of this page.
