| Congratulations to the Walnut Hill Staff Dr. Alvera Parrish visited Walnut HIll E.S. on Monday February 6,2012 to announce that the Walnut Hill staff had won the recent Maintain Don't Gain challenge. Over a six week period which included the Winter Break, Petersburg school employees participated in a challenge to not gain any weight and either maintain weight or lose weight. WHES staff members were the overall winners in the division. A total of 296 pounds were lost by employees in the division. WHES was presented with a Kuerig coffeemaker and an assortment of coffees, hot chocolates and teas. Dr. Parrish also thanked the staff for their hard work and encouraged everyone to become involved and be aware of the budget process that will be happening in the very near future. |

Petersburg Christmas ParadeOn December 3, 2011 the annual Petersburg Christmas Parade was held at 3:30. The day was beautiful- a little chilly,but it is December. Walnut Hill Elementary School (current, former and future students) was well represented by its students, patrons and parents both as participants and as observers. We were represented by our Drill Team, our football team, our cheerleaders, Girl Scouts, various daycare providers and many other organizations. Some of our former students were represented in other schools as cheerleaders and band members and in many other actiivities.
It was a great day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves! Red Ribbon WeekStudents in all grade levels at Walnut Hill got into the Red Ribbon spirit the during the week of Oct 24 -28. National Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to set aside each year to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Among the sponsored events were Backwards Day (turn your backs on drugs); Cap Day (put a cap on drugs); Sunglasses Day (shade out drugs): Sock Day (sock it to drugs) and Tie Day (tie one on against drugs).This year students were also encouraged to enter a poster contest. Students could create a poster, write a poem or song/rap or write a one page essay on the theme..

Walnut Hill Spelling BeeWalnut Hill has held all of its grade level Spelling Bees- 1st grade representative will be Elvyion Shaw (E. Wilson's class), Willow Walton ((B. Phillips) will represent the 2nd grade, Jalen Morton (E. PIerce) will represent 3rd grade, Jordan Winfield ( L. Pickett) will represent 4th graden and Anasia Monroe (K. Lipscomb) will represent 5th grade. The schoolwide Spelling Bee was held on Friday, November 18th at 1:30. The winner of the Walnut Hill Spelling Bee was Jalen Morton. Jalen will represent Walnut Hill at the Divison-wide Spelling Bee.
Kiwanis Congratulate Terrific KidsEach month members of the Petersburg Kiwanis Clubs celebrate Terrific Kids at Petersburg City Schools Elementary School. One child per class (grades K-5) is celebrated each month with a certificate and a visit by a member of the Kiwanis club. Students are chosen by their teachers.
RoarapaloozaOn Friday, November 11th, Walnut Hill students participated in Roarapalooza! This is a part of our ESD (effective schoolwide discipline) program and is held once every 9 weeks. Students who have received no referrals and no suspensions (in-school or out of school) are allowed to participate. Students participate in a variety of activites which include: computer time, games and puzzles, active games (Twister, hula hoop, jump rope, etc.) and dancing. The activity is held during the students' resource time. Look at the Raorapalooza slide show at the top of this page.
Congratulations to Mrs. Dorothy Patterson!Congratulations to Mrs. Dorothy Patterson for having the most students in her class sign-up for library cards. September is Library Card sign-up month for public libraries and the school libraries in Petersburg team up with the Petersburg public library to get children signed up for library cards. This is Mrs. Patterson’s 5th year in a row to have the most students sign-up. She received a book, a puppet and a tote bag. Tigers Show ROAR behaviorWalnut Hill utilizes a program called Efective Schoolwide Discipline (ESD) When students practice
R (espectful),O(rganized), A(ttentive), R(esponsible) (ROAR) behavior they are rewarded with Tiger bucks which they can spend at the monthly Tiger Mart, Students are also rewarded quarterly if they have received no office referrals or suspensions by participating in Roarapalooza. Teachers and their students are rewarded with class bucks when they are observed moving quietly in the halls and also for being respectful, organized, attentive and responsible by other teachers, administrators ofr staff.
